MineSaga's Story - Two Year Anniversary

Hi everyone.

We've got a little bit of a different post today. If you didn't know, today marks two years since the day that MineSaga was first released. In this post, I'll summarise how we came to launch MineSaga, some of the challenges we've faced, and how we've got to the point we're at today.

If you're not interested in reading, that's totally fine - but some of you may find it interesting, whether you're new and want to know more about our history or if you're an OG player who wants to reminisce.

So, what's the actual story?

In late 2017, myself and the other two owners had relaunched an old competitive PVP server of ours, after months of working on it. We'd each invested a large sum of cash and time into this project, with the aim of it being as successful as it was a year or two prior when we closed it down. To summarise, our launch got 500 players, which to some may seem like a lot, but with the amount we'd invested, it really wasn't worthwhile to continue. We then sold the assets we had for this project and had no idea what to do next.

It took us a few weeks, and we discussed a lot of different options and came to the agreement that we'd make a minigames server. However, we knew that we couldn't fund this directly, as we were already at a loss from the previous project (even after we sold it), and decided we'd launch a Skyblock server as a temporary means to fund this new minigame project. Within two weeks, we'd setup the Western realm and had it ready to go.

We'd then decided to release another realm before we release Western (honestly have no clue why this was, but there must've been a reason behind it) and we decided to get Space out first. We started approaching YouTubers to see who we could get to partner up with us, and the first person we were able to get was FactionsRaven.

Raven agreed, and we decided to launch the Space realm. The release wasn't as great as you'd expect, there were countless bugs, lag issues, and a lack of players. We had 250 players at a peak and were down to 100 after a few hours, which to me wasn't that awful. @Gullible/@System thought it was awful, and left an hour after launch to get drunk. If you want to see how the release was, you can watch Raven's stream here, as it's still live to this day.

After we'd sorted all the issues on Space, we were in a rush to release another realm as fast as we could. We decided to release Western with CreepersEdge, who also did a series on MineSaga. This release went a lot more smoothly, and I believe we were now averaging a few hundred players consistently. Not bad for a server that's only been up two weeks?

We continued this path of rapid expansion for a few months, with a realm (and in some cases, two) releasing every other weekend, and new YouTubers joining all the time. The order we released realms in was Space, Western, Mystic, Jurassic, Pirate, Medieval, Kingdom, Blizzard, and Utopia.

Keep in mind that, this is all very hard to achieve. We were struggling heavily with server performance and player drops/disconnections, and we've eventually got it to a point where we can handle 1k players on a single server instance.

Within 9 months of our release, we'd hit our player record of 5,000+ players.

It's from here on that people say we've died or fell off, or something of the sort. Whilst it may seem to be true, it isn't necessarily true. I'll get more into that later in this post.

We had to make the decision to merge certain realms due to them being unpopular and there being such a spread of YouTubers that it was making things expensive and also wasn't easy to maintain. It meant that over time, Pirate, Medieval, Blizzard, and Utopia all closed - leaving us with the five realms that we still have up today.

We took a step back on advertising, for a few reasons. One of the reasons is that it's very expensive to continue to promote with large YouTubers, especially when you've got such a large amount of realms to promote. In our peak, we were spending over $30k per month on YouTube promotion alone. Another reason was simply that it wasn't necessary or as effective as it was. We were already an established server, and we were still getting thousands of players without promotion, something we still do to this day.

Since we've released, we've had the privilege of working with dozens of YouTubers, including FactionsRaven, CreepersEdge, TimeDeo, OhTekkers, VintageBeef, Quig, SkyDoesMinecraft, TangoTek, impulseSV, FalseSymmetry, Sharkboy, Duncan, Kenzo, iMakeMcVids, MeeZoid, Grapeapplesauce, Graser, Kiingtong, R0yalMC, docm77, RageTrain, Seapeekay, and probably more that I'm missing out.

In early 2019, we decided to do a major overhaul of the network, which we branded as MineSaga 2.0. Whilst we believed, and still do, that this was a much better version of the network, there was some backlash over the content we added. We've since done various things to revert these changes and you may have noticed that in the recent set of resets. We then released MineSaga 3.0, which had similar complaints.

This is not the end of MineSaga, and we've got lots of awesome things planned for 2020 and beyond. We're excited for the future, and we hope you are too.
